The discipline of regularity

You four people who continue to faithfully read this blog deserve my heartfelt thanks.

The problem with my blog (well, one of the problems with my blog) is that it’s so hit-and-miss. I don’t write to it regularly. This is probably why nobody reads it except my closest friends.

So here’s my blogging regime from now on: I’ll post something on or about every Wednesday. Never mind whether I have a big, earth-shaking essay to write. I’ll put up something every Wednesday at least.

Regularity is, I think, one thing that has enabled The Word Nerds to develop a considerable worldwide following. It’s a pain in the ass to crank the thing out every week, but it makes all the difference in the world. It’s the basic time structure of the show: whatever we have to say, we say it every week.

  • My blog suffers from the same problem, and I was just about ready to do the same thing – and surprisingly on the same day (the fact that it is midweek from podcast day on Saturday may be related here.)

  • P.S. I cannot believe you wrote a blog entry today and did not even mention that the Nats finally have an owner!

  • Oh, I’ll be writing about that soon, Julie! It’s too big a topic to knock off in five minutes before class starts. And now I have to edit audio before our choir rehearsal this evening.

Look for meaningful musings on the baseball situation tomorrow (Friday).

  • You know, Dave I have exactly zero times I can blog in five minutes. I’m envious. I’m looking at minimum 15 minutes to put something together. Another 5 to double check the grammar, a couple to run it through a quick babblefish translation just to see if I have a typo (I have no German spellchecker) then five more to translate the thing into English.

    And if I write something long. . . . .

  • Oh dear. Does this mean you don’t like doing the show anymore? I was wondering if there were an infinity of topics…but maybe not? I’m going to miss it if it leaves…

  • Ellen, do you mean The Word Nerds? Oh, no, we have no plans to stop doing it. Actually, as I am typing this, I’m in the middle of producing the show for this weekend. Now that my wife Barbara has become a regular “guest Nerd,” I imagine we will be able to keep it going for awhile. She is on this weekend, in fact.

This blog is a different kind of creative effort for me, and it doesn’t really have anything to do with The Word Nerds.

And I promise, I really, really am not too far from moving the Word Nerds blog to this WordPress environment, which will make it as easy for you to participate in the Word Nerds discussions as it is for you to comment here. We even plan to have a bulletin-board-type forum. I was just investigating that earlier this afternoon, in fact.

  • Thanks so much, Dave. *grins*
Now that I’ve upgraded my recording equipment (a digital recorder and a more accessible sound editor, my podcast is going to have more features, but that also means it’ll require more time to produce, which I really don’t have right now with exams and things. Yeah for finals ending in 4 days!

  • Let’s put it this way: my blog suffers. Let me shamelessly plug it here: simran.in/blog – I need to be regular too Dave. *SIGH*

  • We all need to be regular. I suggest bran flakes for breakfast.
